The second oldest settlement (after Erk-Kala) is the site of ancient Merv.

Description

Occurred presumably at Antiochus I Soter (3 c. BC). It covers an area of 330 hectares. The Ben Makhan Mosque in the center is hardly recognizable. The Buddhist stupa and monastery in the south east corner of Gyaur Kala are considered as the westernmost excavated example.
